Recreation
SAW Regional Events
The SAW (Staunton, Augusta, Waynesboro) Region includes three senior centers: Waynesboro, Staunton, and Churchville. The three centers get together periodically for special events hosted by one of the locations. These are normally bigger events with more going on than a usual Center day of activities. Sometimes we have a holiday theme, (Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, Mardi Gras, July 4th, etc.) and sometimes we have an educational theme (such as Keys to Brain Fitness).
Billiards
We have two beautiful 8′ slate pool tables in our Recreation Room that are open for play by our members during our normal hours. We have both men and ladies who shoot pool.
Pool players in the Center follow the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) rules except when changes are agreed upon prior to the start of play by the players about to shoot.
We have quarterly pool tournaments for our members. In the September 2010 tournament, we had separate tournaments for the men and the women for the first time.
Crafts
We have several dedicated volunteers who lead craft projects several times a month. Sometimes those crafts are “take-home” crafts and sometimes they are created for the purpose of selling to the public at various events.
One of the items we make for sale that sells extremely well is homemade dog biscuits. We are considering expanding the kinds of dog biscuits we make for future events.
Bridge
- When: Tuesday afternoons (1:30 -4:30) and Friday mornings (9:30- 11:30)
- Where: WSC Meeting Room
- Description: Some bridge groups are very intense and competitive – that IS NOT how ours is! Our Bridge players are very open to having new members join them. This includes people who are new to playing bridge, or who haven’t played for many years and need a refresher. Almost all of our current bridge players were in one of those 2 situations when they joined the group themselves. So, if you want to just “try it” feel free to come on by!
Entertainment
The Senior Center has wonderful support from many talented groups and individuals in the area that are willing to volunteer their time to provide entertainment programs. Usually there is one or two entertainment programs each week.
This includes monthly “regulars” like Orville Bame on piano (first Wednesday), and Dave Perry and Friends (fourth or fifth Fridays).
We also have Duffy The Singing Cobbler, Shirley Sandridge, and Alice Ward who come in every other month. Not to mention the many people who come on a less frequent basis.
Please check the current monthly calendar for details of upcoming shows.
