Fitness
Building Active Adults
When: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10-11 a.m.- Where: Senior Center
- Description: We are pleased to have Mary Beth Robb, a fitness instructor from the Waynesboro Y, to teach this twice weekly fitness class. The class is specifically geared to older adults. Most of the exercises are done seated in chairs. Fitness tools such as hand weights, small exercise balls, and stretch bands are used to scale the exercises to individual abilities. This is a very popular class with many members choosing to attend based on this class schedule. New members are welcome at any time.
Walking
Walking is a tremendous exercise as it is both a weight bearing exercise (as you are carrying your own weight) and can be done at a pace that also qualifies as aerobic exercise.
Walking is encouraged at the Center every day – even if it’s just about grabbing a partner and walking and talking in the hallways. In nice weather, we sometimes have a Parks and Recreation employee come and lead a walk in the local park, and we may also go down and make use of the Waynesboro High School track for walking.
We also have a treadmill that is available for use by our members after receiving training on its safe operation.
Walk Waynesboro
Several members and staff formed a team for the Walk Waynesboro program in the summer of 2010. This program was designed to encourage all residents of the community to engage in regular exercise and to promote activity in the downtown area.
It encouraged walking “100 Miles in a 100 Days” to be recorded in the provided log book and submitted every other week to qualify for door prize drawings. All people were encouraged to participate even if they were not able to walk an average of a mile a day. Several members of the team won doorprizes during the program. And our team was selected in the team drawing at the end which resulted in a $25 donation to our Center.
We hope this program will return in the future so we can participate again.
Fitness Checks
- When: scheduled every other month (odd months), usually at the same time as a Building Active Adults class
- Where: Senior Center
- Description: Follow the trends of your height, weight, body mass index, and body fat percentage every other month. Positive changes can be seen through good food choices, and increases in weight bearing exercises. Every other month checks let you keep on top of gradual positive (or not-so-positive) changes.
Senior Fitness Testing
- When: Scheduled in January and July, over the course of a couple days
- Where: Senior Center
- Description: A set of six exercises that measure your upper and lower body strength and flexibility, as well as your agility and endurance. The tests are from the book “Senior Fitness Test Manual” by Dr. Roberta Rikli and Dr. C. Jessie Jones. It provides simple, easy-to-use tests that assess the functional fitness of older adults. It also has accompanying performance norms based on actual performance scores of over 7,000 men and women between the ages of 60 and 94. While you can see how you rank compared to that national sample, we encourage a focus on positive personal change over time. These types of fitness measures do not change overnight. So the testing is scheduled every six months for progress checks.
