AARP Tax Aide Program
What is the AARP Tax Aide Program?
It is an all volunteer program providing free income tax preparation to low and moderate income individuals of all ages. Service starts at the beginning of February and is provided to the end of the tax filing season.
What is the Schedule for 2013?
Starting February 4th continuing through April 16th, volunteers will be at the Waynesboro Senior Center to prepare income taxes. Our hours will be:
- Mondays: 12:30 pm to 5:00 pm
- Tuesdays: 8:30 am to noon
- Wednesdays: 8:30 am to noon and from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm
We operate by appointments, but will take walk-ins as time permits. Please call 540-941-3259 for an appointment. Please call between the hours of 9AM and 8 PM Monday through Saturday. We serve all low to moderate income persons regardless of age.
Who sponsors the program?
The IRS provides yearly training, testing and certification for all tax counselors. The IRS and AARP provide the computers. The AARP purchases supplies. Waynesboro Senior Center provides the space and the utilities, including the internet connection.
How does someone arrange to have their taxes done by this service?
Every year there is a phone number to call to make an appointment. Clients are told at that time what records to bring with them. When they arrive, an intake person assists in arranging their records and filling out an information sheet. Then they sit down with a tax counselor and their taxes are filled out – both federal and Virginia returns. After the returns have been double checked by another counselor, they are electronically filed and a client copy is printed. We are disallowed to do partial year VA returns as well as various other sections of the Federal tax code. If you have a question concerning tax issues and general tax information call 942-7877.
How can you help?
We are always looking for volunteers. We need tax preparers, intake personnel and appointment takers. If you are interested in finding out more about volunteering, please call Mark Bonar, our local coordinator at 540-942-7877.
